Abstract:
Information Technology (IT), which came into general use in the 1990’s, have become a generic name for any information or telecommunication systems based micro-electronics and this has had a direct impact on women’s development. ITs are adequately capable of serving both men and women; and they are some of those tools needed for enhancing gender equality and women empowerment. The fact that women are not being empowered through Information Technology (IT) in this nation - Nigeria is because of their (women) attitudes towards Science and Technology. Some even believe it to be on gender inequality that has been existing between men and women since creation, the scripture (1 Cor 11:9) says, “Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man”. However, IT has been considered as an important tool in ensuring that women are included in the development of the global information society. Though some also believe that IT alone cannot end gender inequality, but it is also believed that it can help speed up the social change and empowerment. Therefore, this paper looks critically on how women can be empowered using the latest (modern) Information Technology (IT).
